A typical morning scene shows the city’s walkway bustling with human activity — the fast-paced life. Accordingly, the preparation of healthy food at home has been neglected because people either don’t have/find time or are increasingly becoming dependent to the fact that restaurants and fast food chains can readily provide food in just a few minutes. Overweight and obesity resulted from this behavior.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) describes the society today as “‘obesogenic,’ characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, nonhealthful foods, and physical inactivity.”

Getting the society back in shape, in my opinion, through government-initiated health nutrition seminars, sports clinics and physical activities should be the goal in mind. Nutritionists and dietitians should be able to impart the importance of losing weight the healthy way. One may ask, “what is the strongest best suppressant for appetite?”

I would say, “balanced diet (read: green, leafy vegetables and fruits) and exercise, and a strong will to follow through.”

Muñoz Skin Clinic, one of the local dermatology clinics, has been my refuge every time skin breakouts occur. The in-house dermatologist, Dr. B. Muñoz, and I started our doctor–patient relationship on the first semester of 1997.

Our goal then is to help me achieve and maintain pimple-free skin. I was expecting that we would already be able to skip the “achieve” part of our goal by the time I turn a quarter-of-a-century old. Unfortunately, that is not the case for me because the genes have not favored me with healthy, flawless facial skin even as I yearly turn a year older. Hence, fast-forward to today, regular appointments with the dermatologist are still being scheduled for basic acne treatment with facial or diamond peel (if skin is free of acne). It is also during these checkups that the doctor will be able to check if the prescribed acne products are working just fine for my type of skin.

I thought pimples only occur during the pubescent stage and very rarely during pregnancy for some females, I’m wrong.

Now that my brother Ray is back hitting the gym, I feel a bit compelled too to lose weight, otherwise I might end up being heavier than him. Right now, he says he is at 240+ lbs, but judging from experience, as he has already done it before, when he decides to shed pounds, he usually means business, and he follows through with it. He even got a gold card at the GNC boutique, where he gets his workout supplements.

Thinking of hitting the gym myself, I asked him which supplements I should get just for muscle toning and weight loss gym workouts. He did give me a couple of suggestions including online hemo rage black reviews, to help me on my research and hopefully help me decide which ones to get. Whew! I am already getting pumped up at the thought of hitting the gym!

Ever since Borski has gotten me addicted to the CSI television series, I have been just that – addicted. Needless to say, every time I chance upon an episode on TV, unlike all other instances (except just one, when I find badminton matches being televised), I find myself no longer switching channels, which is quite a relief. Quite honestly, maybe I am finding my attention span being shorter and shorter when it comes to television programs. This is also the reason why I try and download movie torrents such that Borski and I can view them at our own convenience and no longer fit our schedules based on the TV program schedule. So, for all other CSI addicts out there, here is a bit of trivia, regarding one of the terms you would often find mentioned in the episodes – rigor mortis. Thanks to Wikipedia, from which I got this material.

Rigor mortis (lit. death stiffness) is one of the recognizable signs of death (Latin mors, mortis meaning “of death”) that is caused by a chemical change in the muscles after death, causing the limbs of the corpse to become stiff (Latin rigor) and difficult to move or manipulate. In humans it commences after about 3 hours, reaches maximum stiffness after 12 hours, and gradually dissipates until approximately 72 hours (3 days) after death. Heat sources such as fire can speed up the process of rigor mortis. The degree of rigor mortis may be used in forensic pathology to determine the approximate time of death.

There you go.

Now that I get to read up on a lot of reviews of products that you can get online, the more I can say that I have become skeptical of those so called ‘miracle products’. If you ask me, there is no substitute for face to face, personal interaction when it comes to getting feedback on products that could potentially be harmful to one’s health. More often than not, these diet pills advertised online do not also have a certification from the FDA, or they just post a disclaimer or something to that effect.

I guess we all have to try these at our own risk. However, for those people who would like to do a more in depth reading up before trying it out, perhaps you can do so on particular websites, such as one that I found for the product lipozene. After all, the more information you get, the better and more informed decision you will make, right? For me, I’ll stick to exercising for the meantime. Hopefully, it works out for me. Hehe.

No, this post is not about the weigh in before Pacquiao’s match. Rather, it is about MY weigh in.

Whenever I get back from duty, Borski would always weigh me just to know if I had gained or lost weight since the last time I left. Most of the time though, I am leaning towards the ‘gain’ side, much more than the ‘lost’ side, all thanks to my inability to control my appetite, as well as due to being unable to get some exercise in when I am at work either in Manila or in the field. Just yesterday, I checked, and I was over 200lbs. Sigh.

When I was due to report for 1 single tour of duty (14 days when at the field), I was thinking it would be easy to control my diet, since I would be in the field, and no one would be prodding me to eat during meal times. I am saying this because when I am at the head office, even though I am still feeling full, whenever lunchtime comes, I find it hard to say no whenever my officemates call me out to have lunch. However, I found out that my inability to control my appetite was not tied in to wherever I was posted. It was just me, period. Now I am thinking maybe I just need the strongest diet pills available.

Just yesterday evening, I was able to spend around 3 hours at the badminton court sweating it out. It would be the start of a week-long exercise regimen, I hope. When the next weigh in time comes next week, I hope I could get my weight down to around 192lbs. Wishful thinking….

The irony of life. At least that’s how I see it.

I am referring to my observation that people in my country (well, most of them i think) would trade their golden brown complexion to have a lighter complexion. This could partly be explained by the duration in which we have been under colonization, first by the Spaniards (300+ years), and then by the Americans. If you ask me, we have been brainwashed from all those foreign influences, and subconsciously, that is why we want to be whiter. If you were someone marketing Glutathione or skin whitening creams, then our country would be a good market for those items.

Now for the ironic part. If people from our country want to have lighter complexion, I guess the opposite is true. Where people have lighter complexion, they wanna get a tan. This is why indoor tanning lotions are in nowadays, what with the dangers that old-fashioned tanning poses. Blame it on global warming, if you would.

Yet the irony still remains.

Back when my brother was still applying for a job as a flight attendant in a local airline here, which was some 4 years ago, he had mentioned that one of the requirements for the job, aside from the intellectual proficiency requirement (after all, you would need to be composed and have the presence of mind to make fast and potentially life-saving decisions), there also is that requirement that you do not have any pimples, or any skin problems. After all, you are the front line hospitality representative of the airline, and just like bank tellers and hotel receptionists, it would make sense that this asset would be one of the prerequisites for the job, right? I wonder what adult acne treatments these flight attendants maintain, since they would have to continually keep this up, and considering that they also keep irregular job hours, and a stressful work environment at that (Disclaimer: That is a personal opinion of someone who isn’t comfortable with flying).

After being battered by a massive earthquake earlier this year, Haiti is in the headlines once more, with a Cholera outbreak that has already taken more then a 280 lives.

However, experts say that this number still hasn’t peaked and is still on the rise. The picture you would see right now is that of thousands of earthquake survivors, all cramped in makeshift tents. Sadly, those conditions are so conducive for cholera to spread like wildfire. The acute intestinal infection is caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Although easily treated, it has a short incubation period of a few hours to 5 days and causes acute watery diarrhea that can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death without treatment. I guess what is needed is for other nations to not stop the support that was already generated after the immediate event, and keep the aid coming. Surely they could use nutrition affiliate programs to control the spread of contaminated food and water, and stop this outbreak.

If we don’t act now, I wonder how long it will be before there are any left to save.

Just last week, when I took my dad to stay overnight at where we stay in Manila, he did note that no wonder I always come back ‘bloated’ (read: fat) when I come back from duty from our head office in Manila, is because we were getting too comfortable in our new pad, and with buffet breakfast at that. My dad was there as a wedding sponsor for a friend of theirs from business, and since my mom could not attend due to an urgent engagement at work, he asked me to accompany him instead. All throughout that day on Sunday, we ate heavily, from the buffet breakfast, to lunch at Megamall, and to the wedding reception in the evening. Looking back at that now, I guess I should not be surprised that I once again breached the 200-lb mark on the weighing scale. That is the problem with my metabolism you see, it takes sooooo much hard work to trim down, and just with a snap of a finger, I easily put that weight back on.

Discussing this while brisk walking side by side last Tuesday morning at the local oval of the coliseum, I told my dad it is not the lack of exercise equipment, but rather the lack of drive, since we did have a pool, as well as a fitness gym at our lodging place. I did plan way back that whenever I already had the means, and the space for it as well, I would consider purchasing refurbished fitness equipment. I guess I still have a lot of changing to do, since if I do that, and I still did not have the drive to exercise, dust would be all that it catches.
