Sound tripping

Now that our attendance is being strictly monitored during our duty hours on weekends at the head office, and seeing that there are a handful of us who actually report for work on those days, I usually go on sound tripping while I go about my workload for the day. The only difference is that I could indulge in it a bit louder than I would be able to during normal weekdays. In a way, it diminishes the loneliness, and the fact that there aren’t a lot of people I can talk to and interact with. For the last few weeks now, I have been thinking of getting new altec lansing speakers for this. The ones I have, which I brought over from when we transferred to our new office building, are already unreliable and needs a good smack or two for one of the speakers to function. LoL.

Stocking up for the holidays

Looking forward to Borski’s arrival for her Lenten vacation here in Manila (since Muhammad could not go to the mountain, then the mountain comes to Muhammad…lol), I immediately went for grocery shopping to stock up on food, since I was also expecting that major establishments would be closed for the Lenten holidays. With a text message from her on the preference of items she wants me stocked up on, I did just that and was prepped up for the coming holidays.

However, I was surprised as I was putting away the receipt of those purchases today when I noticed that I was charged for two bottles of Pulpy Juice when in fact I only had 1 bottle. I was guessing that I was in such a hurry that I was not able to keep a close eye on the cashier working the laser barcode scanner. Either that, or I was too focused on the big bag of M&M’s that I got.

Oh well, another lesson learned…the hard way.

Looking forward to my Christmas Gift

Just yesterday, I showed Borski the sad state of my laptop, which I bought way back in February of 2008. Come to think of it, it has served me well the past 3 years and I have had a lot of stuff done, thanks to this piece of reliable equipment. Lately though, the screen flicker that I had tried to disregard for the past couple of months has been occurring quite frequently now. Usually, I remedy it by just adjusting the laptop screen, adjusting it forward and backward on the hinge. Most of the time, this solves the problem, however, I did notice that now, it has been getting worse, and sometimes it takes a bit more of adjusting the screen to get rid of the flicker. I did notice this problem too on a couple of my colleagues’ laptops as well, with one as worse as the screen flickering nonstop whenever he turns it on, which usually lasts for about 15 minutes, during the duration of which, he could not make use of his laptop.

Going back to the title of this post, it sounds too early I know, but Borski had already approved my requisition for a new one..haha! A custom laptop for Christmas! I can hear the Christmas bells already! :)

On pain..and gain

For a long time now, I have been contemplating on trying out and hitting the gym, ever since my brother Ray had told me that he had hit the gym once again, in anticipation of his trip back home. However, just the thought of heading out to the gym on a daily basis, the laziness in me kicks in. LoL. Indeed, it takes a bit more self control and discipline to be able to prod myself to workout on a daily basis. Even my favorite cardio workout – badminton – sometimes takes the backseat whenever a good program on TV comes on, especially since also I only have one week off in a month, and naturally would want to spend this on quality time with Borski. This piqued my interest, on available toning machines, without doing the hard work in the gym, specifically on muscle electrostimulation.

Admittedly, I couldn’t blame myself from being skeptical, since most people I know who are in shape have had to put in an hour or two at the gym on a daily basis. However, reading about it some more on wikipedia, I guess there is really some truth to this technology. And, just as I thought, electrostimulation alone is not enough. It has to be in tandem with gym workout to be truly effective. I guess there is no workaround on the gym workout. :)

How time flies

I was pleasantly surprised again the other day when I ran into Norman, an old friend and officemate of mine  from Bacolod city, who had relocated to Manila on work. We met at the mall, while I was looking for a belt (I left my belt at home) and just felt incomplete wearing slacks without any belt on. My officemate had with him his wife and already 3-year old son in tow. The last time I saw him was during the baptism of their son some 2 and a half years ago. I couldn’t help but smile and be amazed at how talkative their little boy was already. Our brief encounter in the department stores afforded us the chance to catch up, albeit just for a moment, and also fill in what had happened since the time we last met, as they were also in a hurry searching for a stadiometer, for the growth tracking of their boy. With an agreement to meet for coffee one of these days, we both parted with huge smiles on our faces. Indeed, how time flies.

Aging gentle giant

If I remember correctly, I read it somewhere that dog years is 7x that of human years (I could be mistaken), but that’s what I recall reading. And I also think that we got our first German Shepherd dog, Kobe, around 2003 or 2004, which makes him around 7 or 8 years old. Convert that to human years, then he’d be around 49 to 56-ish.

For a human, that isn’t what I would label ‘old’, but with Kobe, I have seen the marked difference in how he moves around. Yes still has the energy to play around whenever I call out to him with a basketball, and he still engages me in mock football, but whenever I let him be, you can see the signs of aging. Now, more than ever, he likes to keep to himself, staying under the shade of the mango tree on our lawn. Kobe is quite different from all the other pets we had, in that we had more ‘bonding’ time. I managed to teach him the basic commands such as sit, shake, down, and stay among others. Our memories of him include long walks along Dumaguete City’s scenic boulevard stretch. Our loyal friend, the gentle giant who never fails to brighten up our day whenever we’d see him, is now approaching the twilight of his years.  The last time I checked, his feeding bin had already been destroyed and clearly had seen better days. I hope to buy a replacement next week, together with a grooming brush from Nutrecare Pet Supplies. I hope to be able to take him to the beach a lot more times whenever I am home, and still keep him groomed, well fed and comfortable. It’s all I can do to show him that he is loved.

Career Options

Just last Tuesday, the atmosphere at our workplace was flowing with much energy. The reason – all of the personnel in our department were being paid their retirement benefits, which, due to the long service years of majority of the employees, was quite a substantial amount. Some were quite lucky (including myself) to have received a job offer for the new company, a two-year employment contract. For those who did not, you could somehow tell that their spirits were dampened despite having received their separation benefits.

Around dinner time, most of those who did not receive a job offer, were all huddled in our recreation hall, playing billiards and table tennis, and were discussing possible what best small business to start, considering that they already had in their hands what they needed for start up capital. This poses quite the challenge, as I somehow remember reading about statistics, majority of businesses (say 99%) fail on their first year. Now that they do not have a steady monthly-paying job as of the moment, they better do a better job of managing their finances. My personal suggestion to them for starters,  drop their vices – gambling, drinking, and smoking. Actually, even for those who still have their jobs, I suggest they still do the same. :)
